NOORDWIJK – Ruimtevaartcentrum Estec ontving woensdag 24 oktober hoog bezoek. Niemand minder dan de Italiaanse president Giorgio Napolitano en zijn vrouw Clio brachten een bezoek aan dit gerenommeerde instituut.
Napolitano werd niet alleen begeleid door koningin Beatrix, ook burgemeester Jan Pieter Lokker verwelkomde het hoge bezoek hartelijk. Een fraaie presentatie werd gegeven door de Nederlandse astronaut Andre Kuipers. Ook zijn Italiaanse collega-astronaut Luca Parmitano, die volgend jaar de ruimte in wordt geschoten voor een verblijf in het internationale ruimtestation ISS, vertelde over de geneugten van de ruimtevaart.
Lokker genoot van iedere minuut, zo liet hij weten. ‘We hebben veel informatie uitgewisseld. Er is geen sprake van dat de Italiaanse president naar Estec is gekomen, omdat de Italianen de wens hebben om dit instituut naar hun land te laten verplaatsen. Door de extra bijdrage van Nederland is er nu zekerheid dat we Estec in Noordwijk behouden. En niet alleen dat, ook wordt het onderzoeksprogramma van Estec uitgebreid met onder meer satellieten voor communicatie, het weer, geologie en klimaatverandering.’
